Canada is the garter snake capital of the world. Each year at the break of spring, red-sided garter snakes in Narcisse, Canada engage in an unusual ritual. Thousands of them begin emerging from their underground dens during the last week of April and their numbers peak during the second week of May. The reason? They’re all out to mate.

Every year, the Narcisse Snake Dens of Manitoba, Canada draw a mind-boggling mass of more than 70,000 garter snakes. Each spring, masses of red-sided garter snakes congregate inside limestone caves to form mating balls, in which up to a hundred male snakes vie for a single female.
