Built in 1889 and named after its designer, engineer Gustave Eiffel, the tower was built as the as the entrance arch for the Exposition Universelle, a World Fair marking the centennial celebration of the French Revolution.
The tower was built by three hundred workers by joining together 18,038 pieces of puddle iron, using two and a half million rivets, in the form of a structure designed by Maurice Koechlin.
