The word tattoo originated in French Polynesia, and is a symbol of their cultural identity. In ancient Polynesian records, the god of tattoo, Tohu, describes painting all the fish in beautiful colours and patterns. For the Tahitians, tattoos are considered a sign of beauty, and in earlier eras, were applied when children reached adolescence.

In Bora Bora, tattooing is a sacred art. In fact, the art of tattoos is believed to have come from two sons of the God of creation.
